MACON was born in mid-May 2001, a private project, through the union of entrepreneurs who invested in buses dedicated to urban passenger transport in the country’s capital (Luanda), being the first private company in this segment, to respond to the needs of the population, which was clamoring for public transport.
In the early days of its creation, its activity was mainly confined to the province of Luanda, in urban passenger services. Its services were also implemented through the provision of personalized transport services, support for companies in the market (chartering) and car rental for various purposes.
With the advent of peace, Angola entered a period of national reconstruction, with the executive focusing on the rehabilitation and construction of national roads and bridges, allowing the movement of people and goods, which at the time was constrained by the armed conflict.
Accompanying the new winds of peace, MACON undertook its first internal restructuring, redefining various services and seeking to make inter-provincial connections, leaving the comfort zone filled by urban services.
As it grew, MACON embraced intercity and interprovincial transport, moving towards internationalization.
In 2005, MACON began its first inter-provincial routes, linking the provinces of Luanda to Kwanza Sul, Kwanza Sul to Benguela, Luanda to Benguela, Luanda to Bengo, and vice versa. The company’s growth continued until it covered all 17 provinces, with the exception of Luanda to Cabinda (the 18th province), due to its geographical discontinuity.
Since it was set up, MACON has provided urban services in the city of Luanda, inter-municipal services in the province of Cabinda, inter-provincial services (in the circulation and connection between the 17 provinces) and international services – land connections across borders with neighboring countries, for now Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In 2013, the first initiative to enter the Namibian market took place, with the creation of the company MACON NAMÍBIA PTY, which was effectively consolidated in 2015/16.
In 2018, MACON underwent an internal transformation, ceasing to be a private limited company and becoming a public limited company (S.A.), a situation that occurred with the approval of new Articles of Association, published in Diário da República no. 220, Series III, of December 3, 2018, and now managed and represented by a Board of Directors, made up of three entities, headed by a Chairman of the Board of Directors, who outlined new development strategies, with a commitment to partially renew 25% of the bus fleet.
In 2019, MACON entered the Congolese market, setting up a company called MACON CONGO, S.A., which operates the lines from Kinshasa to Lower Congo; in 2023, MACON expanded to the province of Lubumbaxi, developing to other destinations in this Congolese region.
